Sandia Speedway is constructing a 3/8ths-mile dirt oval for racing as an addition to its facilities on Albuquerque’s Westside. Divisions will include the return of Sprint Cars and Mini-Sprints. Highlighting the weekly program will be Stock Cars, Modifieds, Legends and Cruisers.
Sandia already has a ½ mile paved oval with a ¼ mile infield oval, a 1.7 paved road course, a quarter-midget track, a motorcycle flat track and an arena cross track. The new dirt oval is being built on the site of the motocross course. The motocross course will be rebuilt near its former site.
“We are expanding to offer racers a new dirt venue, a race track built by racers for racers’’ says Jim Guthrie, president of Sandia Motorsports Park.“ We plan to race on the paved oval on the first and third Saturdays of the month and on the dirt oval on the second and fourth Saturdays.’’
Sandia, which will be starting its 11th oval racing season in April, had its most successful year in 2010. The 16 race season in 2010 saw many close finishes, last lap passes and thrilling crashes in all 7 divisions that compete on the asphalt oval.
Since the closing of Duke City Raceway over six years ago there has not been a dirt track in Albuquerque. The dirt oval at Sandia means the return of Sprint Car racing to the city.
“We will decide what classes we’ll run on the dirt after we talk with drivers to see what they want,’’ explains Guthrie, a former Indy 500 competitor who won the IRL Indy-car race in Phoenix in 1997. “We’ll have our first race of the year on the paved oval on April 2 and if the weather cooperates the dirt oval will be ready for racing on April 9.’’
Construction is already underway on the dirt oval, which is just west of the paved track.
“Sprint car racing has a strong history in Albuquerque,’’ says Sandia General Manager David Swope. “We want to offer every type of racing that drivers and fans want, so we decided to build the dirt oval. It’ll make us a more complete facility and fill a need in the biggest city in the state.’’
